Understanding Early Years development and learning is critical in bridging gaps that exists in ECD policy and practice. With global attention recently directed towards appreciation of the value of investing in early years as a foundation for the education and life, there is need for open discourse on how best we can address challenges hinder progress in this stage of development. SDG goal 4.2 states that “by 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care and pre-primary education so that they are ready for primary education.’
As we continue to focus on child readiness for school, it is equally important to assess how schools are ready for children- this includes teachers, infrastructure, facilities, learning materials, methodologies as well as policies to ensure that children grow learn and develop. How do we ensure that early years development is understood to encompass social emotional, cognitive, motor, language as well as well physical well-being of the child among others. Areas that this discussion should focus on include early years curriculum, teacher preparation, children’s assessment and learning, policy environment, etc to ensure that children are catered for in a manner that we promote their development and world view.
